MATTER IS MOTHER

A NEW PLAY ABOUT THE TRAGEDY AND REDEMPTION OF HUMAN TRASH

“IT NEEDS TO BE SEEN”

-BROADWAY WORLD

ONE WOMAN

8 CHARACTERS

Matter is Mother is a 75 minute one-woman magical play that explores the parallels between the way we treat the earth and possessions with the ways in which we treat women & the forgotten “feminine” (our feelings and intuition) in all bodies.  In this fast paced, educational and wildly creative show, Julia Bray plays 8 different characters at an all-inclusive resort called “Paradise”, where plastic is piling higher by the minute, and a sea monster made of garbage threatens guest’s vacation by eating them, forcing a sometimes funny, often painful, and ultimately transformative reckoning with their relationship to their feelings, emotions and lives.

Through a darkly comedic but heartfelt narrative backed by original song, choreography and visuals, this show invites the audience to consider how healing our relationship to our emotional pain could topple the systems of injustice and help the planet thrive. By diving headfirst into the intersections of capitalism, patriarchy and the climate crisis, this inspirational show was highly praised by Broadway World, who called it ” an intelligent and creative look at a global problem that becomes more pressing every day – and it points us toward a solution.”

“MATTER IS MOTHER, which expertly tackles old and new world problems with razor sharp humor and quirkiness, proves to be a provocatively engaging vehicle for its profoundly talented and charming creator, Julia Bray”--Jack Falahee, “How To Get Away With Murder”

ABOUT JULIA BRAY

JULIA BRAY is a creator, performer, writer, singer, dancer, producer and teacher who has lived and created in New York City for the past 10 years, and is now located in Portland, OR. She has performed Off Broadway in multiple productions (including two New York Premiers), and appeared on television in “Law and Order SVU”, HBO’s “How to Make it In America” and “Boardwalk Empire”. Recently she can be seen in the new Nicolas Cage film “PIG”. In January 2015 Julia founded “ALL BOATS” a variety show that features new work in theater, film, dance, song, comedy, performance art and beyond. As a nomination-based series, performing artists recommend fellow creators to take their place in the upcoming show, inspiring inclusion, connection and opportunity within a normally very exclusive industry. All Boats can be seen in NYC, LA and Portland.

Julia’s writing and solo-shows have been seen at Dixon Place, Fresh Ground Pepper, Theater in Asylum, The Habitat Theater Company, CoHo Theater and the variety shows “New Skin” and “All Boats”. She produces and directs the music videos for her comedic music group “Sister Wives”, and is a founding member of two sketch comedy troupes “Thanks For Coming Comedy” and “Emotional Pizza”. She graduated from NYU Tisch with a double major in Drama and Sociology. As a queer spiritual human, Julia’s work lives in the intersection between spirituality, science and comedy. She is obsessed with immersive spaces and the opportunity that art has to transform consciousness. She is a certified Kundalini Yoga teacher, a practicing astrologer, and a meditation coach.
